what is web hosting ?
Generally internet hosting services are provided by companys who run internet servers and allow individuals and businesses to serve their own content on the internet, there are many companys offering various kinds of services and levels of service.

A common type of hosting service is web hosting and companies who offer web hosting services provide space on their web servers which clients pay an annual fee to use and most web hosting companies usually provide a combination of services such as eMail hosting, DNS hosting and domain name registration.

Buying Hosting packages

The cost of web hosting packages varies widely from one web hosting company to the next company, as do the features of the hosting packages that each company provides, such as the amount of disk space, the number of email accounts, limits on bandwidth, and databases support.

The hosting companys also provide an interface or control panel for managing the hosting package and installing scripts and databases and setting up email accounts and email forwarding and other web site administration tasks.

The type of hosting package that is needed for a web site is actually determined by the site itself, for example an eCommerce site would require a comprehensive hosting package that had support for databases, scripting (PHP, Perl, Ruby, ASP, .NET etc), and SSL for secure financial transactions.

A regular web site on the other hand would not need such a comprehensive hosting package that was as feature rich, in this situation the web site would only require a basic hosting package that would cost less than £20 (plus vat) per year.

It is also worth noting that many web hosting companies regularly offer FREE domain names when you buy a hosting package, although the domain names are usually restricted to the .co.uk and .com TLD’s.
